- Kagoshima Prefecture is located at the southwest tip of Kyūshū and includes a chain of islands stretching further to the southwest for a few hundred kilometers. The most important group is the Amami Islands. Surrounded by the Yellow Sea to the west, at least since 1879 by Okinawa Prefecture in the south, Kumamoto Prefecture to the north, and Miyazaki Prefecture to the east, it has 2,632km of coastline (including the 28 islands). It has a bay called Kagoshima Bay (Kinkowan), which is sandwiched by two peninsulas, Satsuma and Ōsumi. Its position made it a 'gateway' to Japan at various times in history. While Kyushu has about 13 million people there are less than 2 million in this prefecture. read more...

- Yakushima, one of the Ōsumi Islands, is an island of about 500 km² and roughly 15,000 islanders to the south of Kyūshū in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The Vincennes Strait (Yakushima Kaikyō) separates it from Tanegashima. The highest point on the island is Miyanoura-dake at 1,935 metres (6,360 ft). - Kuchinoerabu-jima is a volcano located in the Ryūkyū Islands, Japan. In the eruption on December 24, 1933, a village northeast of Shindake was destroyed, 8 people died and 26 were injured. - - Please be advised that they have a lot of rain (10,000 mm per year). You may have to be prepared for that. There will be some recommended eclipse observation spots in these islands. You can check the photos and locations of these, visiting Yaku-shima official eclipse web page. These places are only “recommended” places, and other places may not always be prohibited.

In minamitanega cho town, there is the space center of JAXA, if you are lucky you can see the raunch of space rocket. This is the reason that TANEGASHIMA is known as "the nearest island to the moon".

- - TOKARA islands are composed by 7 habited islands and 5 uninhabited islands. Totally population is under 700 people. To go tokara islands, transportation is only ferry by toshima village, the timing is only 2 times a week from Kagoshima port. The center line of T.E.. will pass through on tokara islands, so you'll see very long T.E. over 6 min. But some of those islands have mountain and active volcanoes,it's better to take care of the wind direction. In TOKARA islands, there are no super market, convenience store, hotel, hospital, restaurant, ATM etc.... You have to stay at some of small hostel (3-4 places in island). Usually accommodation fee is including 3 times of meals. When it's turn to bad weather, ferry will not run. Please note it's not rare to lock in islands!! It's impossible to use any credit cards. I recommend you to bring extra money.

Lying roughly two-thirds of the way north of the island chain, it is part of Kagoshima Prefecture, in the Kyūshū region of Japan. The Amami dialect is part of the Ryūkyūan languages group.
